Alright everybody, let's talk about mental health!
In recognition of Bell Let's Talk Day I thought it would be fitting to publish a blog post that discusses the importance of our mental health. This is a topic that strikes close to home as I, along with my girlfriend, have both personally struggled with our own mental wellness. Through our own experiences we have come to learn that everyday isn't going to be picture perfect, and that mental health struggles are something we have to face on a daily basis. Her and I have sought out professional help and have relied on friends and family for support when we need it. We have also put a lot of work and energy into developing strategies of our own that help keep us in a good state of mind. And, for the days that aren't so great, we have strategies for those days too.
Unfortunately there is still a stigma surrounding mental health and it's up to all of us to put an end to it.
For this reason, we choose to be open about our struggles around others because we know its an important step in creating an environment where people feel safe to talk about their personal struggles too! Being open about these issues is difficult, but, it has been extremely rewarding.
So, as you venture out into this day, and everyday after, keep some of these things in mind as we all collectively attempt to put an end to the mental health stigma in 2020:
- If you are struggling, seek out help.
- If you know someone who is struggling, be there for them.
- Do not isolate yourself.
- Encourage others to speak up about their mental illness or struggles.
- Check in on your friends, often.
- Show your acceptance of people as they are.
- If someone needs to talk, be there to listen.
- Do not define yourself by your mental illness.
- Continue to speak up and talk openly about your mental health.
- Be kind to yourself.
- Be kind to others. You never know the power that a simple gesture can have.
- Know that you are not alone. There is always someone who will be there to support you, and that includes us!
If you need to talk, we are here to listen. Drop us a line in the comments section or send us an email - we'd love to talk to you!
And check out our next blog post in a couple of days where we will discuss mental health tips for freelance workers!
